How To Get Lucky
Every time I enter a deli or convenience store, I get stuck in line behind people playing the lottery. It will usually be someone who also buys a pack of cigarettes, a soda, candy. Week after week they play the lottery, buy cigarettes, candy. Week after week they lose.
Over time the money adds up. $10 here, $20 there. Money wasted as in my opinion, the lottery is a regressive tax on the poor. These folks want good luck and fortune to come their way, but have the wrong idea about what luck is in my opinion.
What Is Luck?
1.success or failure apparently brought by chance rather than through one’s own actions.
The thing about luck is it’s not really the metaphysical miracle people think it is. There isn’t any divine intervention or hand of God reaching down to give you help. Good luck and getting lucky has a formula. Bad luck often has a formula too.
This formula is very simple despite what you’ve been told or what you may think and you can definitely make your own good luck. So how to get lucky.
The Good Luck Formula
How you get lucky is very simple. Have a skill, something to offer, a talent, an aspiration. Surround yourself with people who can help you get to the next level or go to where people can help you get to the next level.
If you’re a film student or an aspiring actor/actress, go watch an interview with a famous actor. You’ll hear this so many times. “I left for L.A. with nothing, waited tables, bartended, did odd jobs until I got my shot”.
- An aspiration
- Went to where that aspiration could be fulfilled
If you want to be an actor, you’re not going to move to Missouri, or Memphis, TN. You’re going to go where they make movies.
By doing this you increase your luck. The chance that you’ll be seen by someone who likes what you’re offering increases exponentially. If they don’t, they might know someone else in the same field that does.
You’re not going to look for work on a farm if you want to be an actor. The crazy thing is some people think this is bad luck, rather than misappropriated energy.
If you have a skill, look locally, see if there are groups, organizations you can join around this skill or interest. You’ll meet people with opportunities to offer or guidance. You will see that good luck finds you a lot more than it used to.
How I Get Lucky
I do consulting work in addition to my websites as well. I run Facebook and social media management for a non-profit. How did I get this opportunity? I was out and about and overheard a conversation between two middle-aged women discussing how they could get more people into their venue before a certain date.
I overhead this conversation, politely butted in and inquired more about what they were doing and told them that I could help them. Exchanged numbers, then met about a week later at their office, wrote up a contract, parameters, and that’s it.
The restaurant I met them in is right around the corner from a big hospital, a university, and a string of different non-profits. So it’s just my luck that people who eat at these restaurants would be people from these establishments. Seems like common sense right? Being at the right place, in front of the right people?
It’s not and so many people have a hard time getting it.
But you have to be aware, sharp, respectful, confident. Be healthy, Get started here: Get Started
Prepare yourself for your opportunity and be sharp enough to spot your luck when it pops up. Because it will pop up.
